Oppo claims Dimensity 9400 powers Find X8’s impressive battery life, explains curved screen choice for Find X8 Pro

The Oppo Find X8 and Find X8 Pro are two high-end flagship smartphones, with Oppo emphasizing that battery life was a key focus during their development.

As the season of flagship launches unfolds, two major chipsets are dominating the spotlight: the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Chip. Both are highly capable, each excelling in different areas. However, unlike previous years where Snapdragon-powered devices often took the lead, this time, the first flagship phones to hit the market are equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400. Leading this trend are Oppo’s new flagships — the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro.

Naturally, some may wonder why a phone priced near ₹1 lakh, a premium tier traditionally associated with Snapdragon-powered devices, features a MediaTek chipset. This question has been on the minds of many, including us at India Today Tech.

To address this curiosity, we reached out to Oppo for clarification. At the global launch of the Find X8 series, India Today Tech had the chance to speak with Arne Herkelman, Oppo’s Head of Product Management. He provided insight into the decision-making process behind the choice of the Dimensity 9400.

Herkelman explained that Oppo collaborates closely with both MediaTek and Qualcomm for its chipset requirements. The decision to use the Dimensity 9400 wasn’t about favoring one brand over the other. Instead, it was driven by the desire to select the chipset that best aligned with the performance and user experience Oppo aimed to deliver with the Find X8 series.

“We work with both companies and we always pick the chipset and the supplier, the vendor, the partner that offers the best for the actual product. with the Find X8 series, we chose MediaTek, while the Oppo Pad 3 Pro — which too was introduced at the global event – uses Qualcomm,” said Herkelman.

It ultimately comes down to priorities and the unique strengths each chipset brings to the table. From our discussion with Herkelman, it became clear that with the Find X8 series, Oppo has prioritized battery life and efficiency above all else. To meet these goals, the company made a strategic decision to equip the devices with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset.

Herkelman emphasized that the new Find X8 series delivers “around 40% higher energy efficiency,” a significant improvement directly attributed to the choice of the Dimensity 9400. This focus on efficiency underscores Oppo’s commitment to enhancing battery performance without compromising on overall user experience.

“The Dimensity 9400 is a good fit this year for us and it supports what we wanted to achieve with the Find X8 and the Find X8 Pro. (We wanted) thin smartphones, light smartphones, very powerful smartphones where the battery lasts for like almost forever,” Herkelman highlighted.

It’s worth emphasizing that Oppo’s claims about the Find X8 series’ battery efficiency are backed by real-world performance. In our review, both the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro delivered outstanding battery life, fully validating Oppo’s assertions regarding the Dimensity 9400’s power efficiency.

During our PCMark battery test, the Find X8 lasted an impressive 18 hours and 9 minutes, while the Find X8 Pro pushed even further, clocking in at 20 hours and 45 minutes. It’s important to note that this test doesn’t drain the battery completely but stops once it reaches 20% remaining.

These are some of the most impressive battery performance figures we’ve seen in any smartphone, particularly in the flagship category. It’s clear that Oppo and MediaTek have achieved something remarkable with the Dimensity 9400, delivering a perfect blend of efficiency and endurance that sets a new benchmark for high-end devices.

Flat Screen on Find X8, Curved on Find X8 Pro: Here’s Why

While the Dimensity 9400 chipset sparked plenty of curiosity, another detail we noticed during our review was the difference in display design between the two models. Oppo chose a flat display for the standard Find X8, while the more premium Find X8 Pro features a curved screen—a decision that stands out, especially since flat screens, as seen on devices like the iPhone and Google Pixel, are currently more popular. So, why the difference?

Oppo explained that the standard Find X8 was designed with a more compact, boxy form factor, catering to users who prefer the sleek, practical feel of a flat display. In contrast, the Pro model, with its larger size, required a different approach. To make the bigger device feel slimmer, more elegant, and comfortable to hold, Oppo opted for a curved-edge display, striking a balance between size and ergonomics.

“With the Find X8 we have this squarish form factor. It has a very modern look. It’s kind of becoming common across the industry to have these square, flat profiles — flat back, flat front. Some people say they like a curved display, while others prefer a flat display,” said Herkelman.

For the more premium Pro model, he explained, “Because it’s a bigger screen, we decided to use our Infinite View display to offset the size. Otherwise, it would need to be thicker, as flat sides would make the phone visually and physically thicker, harder to hold. With the Infinite View, it has a very gentle curve to the edges.”

It’s an interesting and somewhat unconventional contrast. Typically, manufacturers reserve the trendier design choices for their premium devices. Yet, Oppo has flipped the script. While the Find X8 embraces the modern, flat-screen aesthetic, the Find X8 Pro sticks with a more traditional curved-edge design—one that some might consider a bit dated.

However, there’s logic behind this decision. Devices like the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and iPhone 16 Pro Max, with their flat screens and flat frames, can feel slightly awkward or less comfortable to hold over time. In contrast, curved-edge phones offer a more ergonomic grip, making them easier to handle, especially given their larger size. In essence, the Find X8 aims for a sleek, stylish appeal, while the Find X8 Pro prioritizes comfort and practicality, catering to users who value ease of use in a larger device.
