When will we finally expose the ‘green tea for weight loss’ deception? – Lifestyle
Kerala News
Green tea is highly beneficial for overall health; however, it is not a magical remedy for weight loss. So, who turned this tea into a so-called ‘superfood’?

At some point, we’ve all heard it: ” Drink green tea to shed those extra kilos, it works.” Whether through social media, advertisements, or casual discussions, the link between green tea and weight loss appears widely embraced.

But is it truly the miraculous solution it’s been promoted to be?
The answer might catch you off guard—and not in the way the wellness industry would like you to think. The reality behind green tea’s supposed weight-loss benefits is, at best, unclear, and it’s time we recognized it for what it is: misleading and exaggerated (not to mention the unpleasant taste).
Is green tea for fat loss just a scam?
Green tea’s ascent to fame as a weight-loss aid took time. It began with research indicating that the tea contains catechins, an antioxidant that enhances metabolism.
Marketers quickly seized on this notion, and soon, green tea became closely linked with weight loss. However, most people should have noticed the fine print: the effect of green tea on metabolism is minimal, short-lived, and often overstated.

Deepali Sharma, clinical nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, says, “Green tea can indeed support weight loss, but the effects vary widely depending on an individual’s lifestyle and exercise habits. It has a modest impact, mainly by boosting metabolism, suppressing appetite, and increasing the feeling of fullness (satiety). Additionally, it promotes fat breakdown in the body.”
“However, relying solely on green tea for weight loss isn’t effective. For best results, it should be combined with lifestyle changes and regular exercise. The timing and pattern of consumption also influence its effectiveness. Green tea works as part of a broader approach to health,” she adds.
Nupur Saraf, consultant nutritionist at Nutriment, further explains, “Fat loss cannot be attributed to consuming or eliminating any particular item from one’s diet and depends on the overall lifestyle and calorific balance maintained by one. The only way green tea could help with any fat loss is if it is used as a substitute for regular tea, i.e., without milk and sugar, which helps cut down the calorie intake.”

Dietician Chayanika Sarmah also echoed similar thoughts and says, “It minutely increases the metabolism, which is negligible. The difference can only be visible if a proper diet is maintained. Even with the diet, it is not just about reducing the calories but also keeping in mind the quality of food you are having.”
The Marketing Mastery
A report from Allied Market Research reveals that the green tea market was valued at $14.8 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $29.3 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.04% from 2022 to 2030.
This growth can be attributed to the rising demand for health-enhancing beverages. However, we must also acknowledge the role of savvy marketing. Brands have successfully positioned green tea as a wellness staple, branding it on everything from supplements to skincare products.
Much of the “evidence” supporting these claims originates from small, inadequately controlled studies or animal research, yet the hype continues because quick solutions are appealing. While it’s undeniable that green tea has health benefits, the issue lies in its exaggerated portrayal as a superfood.

Varsha Sharma, ShardaCare-Healthcity, Uttar Pradesh, says, “The benefits of EGCG in green tea have been widely researched, but the evidence remains inconclusive. So far, studies haven’t provided sufficient proof that it effectively detoxifies the body, treats diseases, or promotes longevity.”
The Additional Advantages
Although green tea is frequently promoted as a weight-loss remedy, its advantages extend beyond merely burning stubborn fat.
Pooja Shah Bhave, a Mumbai-based consultant clinical dietician, explains, “Oxidative damage caused by free radicals can lead to cancer, artery blockages, and accelerate ageing. Green tea, rich in antioxidants like EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), combats this damage.”
She emphasizes that consuming 1-2 cups daily primarily benefits overall wellness, enhanced skin health, and cardiovascular fitness—not solely for weight loss.
Final Thoughts
Green tea shouldn’t be viewed as the enemy, nor does it warrant such treatment. The real issue lies with the marketing exaggerations that have distorted our understanding of this beverage. While green tea does offer health benefits, it is not a miraculous solution for weight loss. Genuine wellness arises from a balanced diet, consistent exercise, and a sustainable lifestyle.
