Indian Railways has launched a significant project in the southern part of India to upgrade 38 railway stations, with an investment of ₹1,830.4 crore. This major redevelopment initiative focuses on enhancing the passenger experience by providing modern, world-class amenities at some of the region’s most important stations. The key stations targeted for improvement include those in the bustling cities of Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Cherlapally, which are vital hubs for the state of Telangana. The goal of this ambitious project is to create state-of-the-art stations that cater to the growing needs of commuters, offering better facilities, improved services, and a more comfortable journey for all passengers.
The redevelopment of these 38 stations is a crucial part of the larger Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), a transformative initiative by Indian Railways aimed at modernizing and upgrading railway infrastructure across the country. This scheme is designed to provide passengers with more comfortable and modern railway stations that meet global standards. Among the stations slated for redevelopment are the major ones in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, two of the most significant urban centers in Telangana. With a total investment of ₹1,830.4 crore, this project is set to transform the travel experience in the region by implementing substantial improvements in station infrastructure, passenger amenities, and accessibility. The redevelopment is expected to not only enhance the aesthetics and functionality of these stations but also accommodate the rising demand for seamless and efficient rail travel in the state.
South Central Railway (SCR) officially confirmed the development plan last week. Secunderabad station, in particular, will receive an extensive facelift, with ₹700 crore allocated for its renovation. Hyderabad Deccan station will undergo a significant upgrade as well, with ₹309 crore earmarked for its development.
Additionally, Cherlapally station will be transformed into a satellite terminal, a rare and advanced feature not found in many stations across India. This transformation will come at a cost of ₹430 crore. The redevelopment of these stations is part of a broader vision to provide passengers with modern infrastructure while fostering local economic growth and development.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), launched by Indian Railways, is a nationwide initiative aimed at modernizing and transforming railway stations into world-class infrastructure. The scheme’s core objective is to enhance the passenger experience by upgrading stations with state-of-the-art facilities, improving accessibility, and ensuring better services. Under this ambitious program, several stations across the country are currently undergoing significant redevelopment to align with global standards of comfort, safety, and efficiency. These upgrades include enhancing station layouts, improving waiting areas, providing modern amenities, and incorporating green and sustainable practices in the design and construction. The ABSS initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to meet the growing demands of passengers and modernize the country’s transport infrastructure.
According to SCR, the redevelopment of these stations will follow a detailed master plan, which includes a range of upgrades. These improvements will involve enhancing station facades and entrance porches, widening access roads, installing clear and attractive signage, creating pedestrian-friendly walkways, and upgrading parking facilities to ensure a smoother, more comfortable experience for passengers.
Additionally, the stations will be equipped with better lighting, landscaped areas, green spaces, and showcases of local art and culture, aiming to provide a more pleasant experience for travelers. This initiative will also promote the “One Station, One Product” scheme, which highlights local crafts and products at the railway stations.
Additional upgrades will include the construction of elevated platforms equipped with ample shelters, the installation of advanced public announcement systems, and LED-based station name boards. The improvements also encompass enhanced waiting areas, clearer and more intuitive signage, as well as optimized traffic management. Furthermore, the stations will feature integrated intermodal connectivity, ensuring smoother transitions between different modes of transport.
