Apple is reportedly developing a dedicated App Store for Gaming Apps

Kerala News

Apple is reportedly developing a dedicated app exclusively for gaming, combining features from both the App Store and Apple Arcade.

Following the release of the iPhone 16 series, Apple continues to enhance its software lineup, including the much-anticipated Apple Intelligence debut this month. The tech giant appears to be taking its commitment to gaming a step further with plans for a standalone game-focused app. According to a report by 9to5Mac, this new gaming app will integrate elements from the App Store and Game Center but will not replace Game Center; instead, it will link with users’ Game Center profiles.

New iOS games app

This new iOS gaming hub is anticipated to come with various dedicated sections, offering users an organized, immersive experience. Among these sections will be a “Play Now” tab, where users can find curated editorial content about popular games, explore expert recommendations, and access new and trending titles. This section aims to be a one-stop area for discovering the latest games and updates, providing a richer, more streamlined experience for players. Additionally, users will have easy access to challenges tailored to their interests, a detailed leaderboard to track progress and compete with friends, and a range of achievements to unlock, adding a layer of accomplishment to gameplay. Apple is reportedly considering an expansive collection of games from both the App Store and Apple Arcade, which would allow users to experience all types of games in one place. To keep things fresh, the app may also spotlight unique gaming events, seasonal activities, and major updates from developers, creating an environment that feels vibrant and alive with activity.

Apple is also investigating new ways to integrate its FaceTime and iMessage platforms into this gaming app, potentially making communication between players smoother and more dynamic. With these additions, Apple envisions an experience where players can instantly chat, share in-game moments, and even join multiplayer games without needing to exit the app. FaceTime and iMessage integration could foster a more social atmosphere within the gaming community on iOS, giving players more options for in-game connections. Furthermore, Apple is experimenting with adding support for mini-games created through App Clips, allowing developers to introduce quick, interactive games that can be played on-demand without a full download. This feature would open new opportunities for developers to offer bite-sized games that can be accessed directly from links, messages, or even through QR codes.

In terms of functionality, Apple’s new gaming app is designed to operate similarly to the Xbox app for iPhone, providing a streamlined platform for gamers to keep track of their overall gaming status, view real-time updates on friends’ activities, and easily discover new games of interest. Users will be able to build and manage a personal game library within the app, organizing their collection to fit their gaming preferences. By centralizing these features in one app, Apple seeks to give users more control over their gaming ecosystem, making it easy to pick up where they left off, join friends in multiplayer games, and discover fresh content all in one place. This new approach reflects Apple’s broader commitment to enhancing its devices’ appeal to the gaming community, as the company looks to attract more gamers to its platform by offering a seamless, community-oriented experience.

These ambitious plans come at a time when the tech industry is witnessing a heated debate over app store policies and revenue distribution, as seen in the ongoing legal dispute between Google and Epic Games. This dispute centers on the commission fees charged by app stores and the restrictions placed on app distribution. Epic Games, the company behind the popular game Fortnite, has raised concerns about the revenue-sharing models imposed by both Google and Apple, arguing that these policies limit developer freedom and raise costs for users. Apple’s move to create a dedicated gaming app could be seen as a response to such criticisms, potentially offering developers a new venue to reach players while showcasing Apple’s commitment to fostering a developer-friendly environment.

Currently, Apple Arcade offers a subscription service for $6.99 per month (about Rs 580), granting access to a wide range of games for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. With iOS 18 and macOS 15, Apple also introduced new tools to help developers bring Mac games to iOS.

As for Apple’s rumored gaming app, an official release date has not been announced, and it’s unclear whether it will debut with an iOS 18 update or as part of iOS 19.
